    SFS: Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet

Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two star-crossed lovers caught in the midst of a fierce war between the Montagues and Capulets.

Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is both a tribute to friends lost during World War I as well as an ode to French music throughout history.

Pierre-Laurent Aimard will join Esa-Pekka Salonen for Bela Bartók’s Second Piano Concerto, which is full of Eastern European folk dance, snippets of Baroque music, and plenty of drums.

The concerto is considered to be one of the most technically challenging piano pieces ever written, and it is sure to be a thrilling performance.

I attended the vip concert last night and it was amazing! The pre-concert talk with Charles Barber was very informative and the post-concert Q&A with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Pierre-Laurent Aimard was fascinating. The champagne was a nice touch, and the souvenir gift was a great memento of the evening. The performance itself was outstanding. Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet is a complex work, but the Symphony brought it to life in a way that was both exciting and accessible. I would highly recommend this concert to anyone who loves classical music.
