    Mavis Staples was born on July 10, 1939, in Chicago and began her singing career with The Staple Singers at only 11 years old. In 1950, their family group signed to Vee-Jay Records and released “Uncloudy Day” as their first single in 1956. They had great mainstream success over the next several years with hits such as “The Weight” (1968), “Respect Yourself” (1971), and possibly their most popular song, 1972’s “…And I’ll Take You There.”
